It's time to begin your tour! Start your morning in the city of Reykjavík with a short guided tour. Head north-west and visit the Settlement Centre in Borgarnes, filling you with knowledge on the Viking Age and the Icelandic Sagas. After just a short hike to the top of the Grábrók volcano crater you will be greeted with continuous views of lava fields, well known in this region of Iceland. Deildartunguhver is Europe’s most powerful hot spring and your guide will teach you all about geothermal energy. Your next stop will be at the unique waterfall of Hraunfossar. The white water runs down from steaming lava fields, of around 900 meters wide, and flows into the Hvitá glacier river. Transferring to the cultural village of Reykholt, you can revel in all the medieval Icelandic history there is on offer here, including those of Snorri Sturluson who is one of Iceland’s best known authors.
Mountains, lava fields, fertile farmlands and fjords are some of the landscapes you will pass on your journey to North Iceland. You can also enjoy the unique experience of an afternoon whale watching* and sea angling in Eykafjorour. Having the chance to see humpback whales, minke whales, harbour porpoises and even dolphins, whilst sailing down the longest fjord in Iceland. You will have the rest of the afternoon to explore Akureyri, known as the ‘Capital of the North’, being Iceland’s second largest city. All before arriving at the picturesque fishing village of Húsavik, on the shores of Skjálandi bay, where you will be staying for the next two nights.
Goðafoss (Godafoss) is also known as the waterfall of the gods and you will understand the reason behind this name when you see this breath-taking waterfall. The rest of the day will be spent exploring the volcanic Lake Mývatn and its many unique features, from lava formations and volcanic craters to bays filled with thousands of birds and ducks. After a full day wandering around Mývatn you can now have a relaxing and rejuvenating soak in the geothermal Mývatn Nature Baths.
Today we continue the journey, travelling from north to east and discovering more volcanic and geothermal activity. Start the day by visiting the volcanic activity at Krafla and the geothermal area of Námaskarð, with its boiling grey mud pools and the very special sulphur smell! Continue your journey to the spectacular Dettifoss (the falling waterfall), which is the most powerful waterfall in Europe as it drops 44 meters into the magnificent canyon of the Glacier River. After a short transfer, stop a Möðrudalur which is the highest altitude residence in Iceland. Here you can enjoy the view of the Queen of Icelandic National Mountain and visit the home-made church on the farm. Finish your day along the Jökuldalur valley reaching the fertile region Fljótsdalshérað in the afternoon.
Driving through green valleys, over mountain roads and along the dramatic fjord line you will soon arrive at Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest glacier of 8400km2 and covers 8% of Iceland alone. Being able to view many of the magnificent glacier tongues descending its main ice cap, make your way to the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Here you will embark a boat and sail around the floating icebergs, observe these icebergs drifting ashore, a vast contrast to the black volcanic sand beach which takes the name of Diamond Beach.
Spend the morning exploring the Vatnajökull National Park, here you can spot Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest mountain in Iceland and the Öræfajökull volcanic glacier. Then you can visit the vast lava field of Eldhraun, which translates to ‘fire lava’, to see its blue-green moss from the largest lava flow in the world. Visit Reynisfjara where basalt columns line the shore from the infamous black sand lava beach. Next stop is the incredible Skógafoss waterfall, falling 60m down the green mountain, and then the waterfall of Seljalandsfoss. Here it is possible to see the waterfall from every angle and even walk behind it (waterproofs advisory!). Travelling along the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and volcano – the one which famously erupted in 2010.
Your day will start with visiting the Friðheimar farm and learning about Icelandic horses and the greenhouse agriculture in this area. Travelling along the Golden Circle for the rest of the day where the three most famous natural sites are. Gullfoss, which translates to ‘Golden Falls’, is one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls and is located in the canyon of the Hvitá River. Walking around the hot springs of the active geothermal area of Geysir, Strokkur erupts every 6 – 10 minutes. The third and final attraction in the Golden Circle is the Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park which is a historical, geological and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After your night’s stay in Reykjavik you will get an individual transfer by Flybus shuttle to the airport.
