Bay of Naples

Pompeiiblog

There is something so magical about Sorrento and the stunning Bay of Naples that I could return year after year and would still be mesmerised and see something new. Whether you are looking for culture, history, beaches or overwhelming scenery and breath-taking views then this area really has it all.

Sorrento boasts a mild climate and is an area of natural outstanding beauty with tiny cobbled streets and quaint squares and with flowers decorating almost every building and really came to real fame, during the late 18th century when many of Europe’s aristocracy came to spend their winters here. The variety of restaurants and bistros is incredible, many owned and proudly run by the locals who are keen to show off their cuisine and bustle around you hoping that you will be impressed and will return! Pavement cafes also line the streets allowing you to sip your cappuccino or “favourite tipple” as you watch many nationalities wander past absorbing the delights of this elegant but bustling town.

The Amalfi Coast is a “must visit” too and I don’t believe there is anywhere like it in the world, frequented by the rich and famous and nothing like having lunch on one of the terraced restaurants giving you the very best view of the coast and watching yachts drift past on the turquoise blue waters. Whilst in the area The Island of Capri is also well worth a visit, which possesses a deserved reputation as a veritable Garden of Eden. While in Capri you may wish to visit the famous Blue Grotto – the large cavern which can only be reached by boat and is bathed in incandescent blue light.

Wherever you travel in the Bay of Naples, the skyline is dominated by the still active volcano Vesuvius which erupted in 79 AD causing the Roman city of Pompeii together with many of its inhabitants to become entombed and Pompeii’s state of preservation today is nothing short of remarkable and is worth a visit as it really is a city frozen in time.

I cannot wait to return, and particularly for a Limoncello liqueur, made from lemons grown locally and cultivated for locals and tourists alike!
