Full Itinerary

Day 1: Bristol Avonmouth

Depart Bristol at 19:15.

Day 2: At Sea

Day 3: La Coruna, Spain

A charming mix of both modern city and old town, La Coruña is capital of the Spanish province bearing the same name in the rugged and beautiful region of Galicia. The symbol of La Coruña, nicknamed the ‘Crystal City’ for the glass-fronted buildings along its attractive seafront promenade, is the 2nd century lighthouse Torre del Hercules. Beautiful old streets and squares are found in Ciudad Vieja. The heart of this old town is the colonnaded Maria Pita Square surrounded by delightful shops, cafes and restaurants.

Day 4 - 5: At Sea

Day 6: Horta, Azores

Horta is a colourful small port on Faial Island, one of the nine volcanic islands that make up the Azores. Taking its name from the Dutch explorer Josse van Huerter who first settled there in 1467, Horta became a convenient stop over for transatlantic journeys thanks to its location in the North Atlantic. Spanish and Portuguese governance over the years has left a European influence on Horta with many fine examples of ornate and beautiful churches scattered around the area. Other remnants of Horta’s colourful past include the Torre do Relógio Clock Tower and the 16th century Forte de Santa Cruz.

Day 7: Praia da Vitoria, Azores

One of the most modern towns in the Azores, Praia da Vitoria is a gateway to the island of Terceira. The town, which sits on a large bay on the island’s east coast, has a long, attractive sandy beach, a smart marina and a pleasant pedestrian shopping area. In its historic centre the narrow streets and alleys are lined with colourful old houses featuring the characteristic, often grated, sash windows.

Day 8: Ponta Delgada, Azores

Since 1546 Ponta Delgada has been capital of São Miguel, which is the largest of the nine islands in the Azores archipelago. In the last twenty-five years the cosmopolitan little town has seen rapid expansion bringing the archipelago its first university, shopping mall and dual carriageway. Yet, it still has a small town charm with squares paved with black and white tiles, beautiful churches, and public buildings with white-painted facades and dark volcanic stone trim. Volcanic activity has produced spectacular scenery on the islands and this extraordinary natural beauty is a highlight of optional excursions.

Day 9: At Sea

Day 10: Funchal, Madeira

Set in a magnificent natural amphitheatre overlooking a wide bay, Funchal is the delightful capital of the beautiful and dramatic island of Madeira. The harbour is right in the centre of town and as you approach the sight of whitewashed buildings with red tiled roofs tumbling down the verdant mountain is spectacular. A modern cable car soars above the bustling city to Monte, which is the start of Madeira’s famous wicker toboggan ride. Wicker baskets, embroidery and the famous Madeira wine are popular souvenirs from the striking island often described as the ‘floating garden of the Atlantic’.

Day 11: At Sea

Day 12: Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city, is home to the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower, 25th April Bridge and Monument of the Discoveries. Wander through the maze of narrow streets in the delightful Alfama district and ride one of the famous old trams.

Day 13 - 14: At Sea

Day 15: Bristol
