Full Itinerary

Day 1: Dover, England

Embark Spirit of Discovery.

Day 2 - 4: At Sea

Spend three days at sea.

Day 5: Gibraltar

Poised between Spain and Africa, Gibraltar has a one-of-a-kind atmosphere which you can experience on a stroll along Main Street. Indulge in a spot of duty-free shopping whilst looking for signs of the overseas territory’s British heritage which is evident in the familiar architecture, money and language – nearly everyone speaks English here. Perhaps head to the top of the Rock to enjoy brunch with Buck’s Fizz coupled with a magical performance by concert pianist Aaron Monteverde and amazing views across the entrance to the Mediterranean.

Day 6: Cartagena, Spain

Enjoy exploring this unassuming coastal city which has a long maritime history thanks to its naturally deep harbour. Learn about ancient seafarers at the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, look out for the life-sized sculpture of a whale tail in the port, count the cannons at the Naval Museum or dust off the city’s Roman roots on a climb to the well-preserved hilltop theatre. Alternatively, join us on a spirited visit to Experiencia 43 for a tour of a forward-thinking family-run liqueur factory, topped off with a tasting of this Spanish favourite which is made with a secret blend of 43 ingredients.

Day 7: At Sea

Spend the day sea

Day 8: Sète, France

Known as the Venice of Languedoc, Sète enchants visitors with the canals and waterfront houses of the low town. Behind it rises Mont St Claire where you’ll find the hillside villas and ateliers of the high town. Sète’s greatest charm though lies in its honest-to-goodness lack of guile. This is a busy, bustling working town with a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere as befitting its setting on the south coast of France. From here you may like to venture to the hulking medieval fortress town of Carcassonne.

Day 9: Barcelona, Spain

Best known as the home of Gaudi and Picasso, Barcelona is a city shaped by its eclectic art and architecture. Spirit of Discovery will put you centre stage and you can enjoy a stroll along Ramblas, the main shopping avenue, which is a short walk from the port. Drop in one of the tapas bars for a bite-sized taste of Spain whilst seeking out must-see sights that include the Gothic Quarter, the stunning UNESCO-protected Sagrada Familia church and Parc Güell. There’s also the chance to visit Gaudi’s Gothic themed Casa Figueres followed by a tour of Casa de les Punxes.

Day 10: Alicante, Spain

For many travellers Alicante is a gateway to Spain, neglecting the beauty right on its doorstep. Set around a wide, curving bay backed by rugged mountains, it’s the main town on Spain's Costa Blanca, so called for its white sand beaches. It’s had a varied history of Greek, Roman and Moorish rule and historical sights include the 18th-century town hall and Santa Barbara castle. Perhaps take a stroll along its palm-shaded promenade, one of Spain's finest, followed by a refreshing glass of sangria. Alternatively, you can visit Elche to see its UNESCO-listed oasis of palms laid out in the 10th century.

Day 11: At Sea

Spend the day at Sea.

Day 12: Lisbon, Portugal

Cruise under the 25 de Abril Bridge to reach Lisbon which is spread across seven hills and segmented into different districts that offer a look at the city throughout the ages. Explore the narrow streets of the hodge-podge Alfama district, admire the elegant 18th-century architecture of Baixa Pombalina or go shopping in neighbouring Chiado. Be sure to seek out the UNESCO-listed Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, which reflect Lisbon’s sea history.

Day 13 & 14: At Sea

Spend two days at Sea

Day 15: Dover, England

Disembark Spirit of Discovery after breakfast.
