Roman Italy and Sardinia with Saga

Overview

Roman Italy and Sardinia with Saga

Cruise past the Amalfi Coast to reach the ancient Roman port town of Salerno.

Follow in the wake of the Roman Empire on this voyage to a series of captivating cities and historical towns across Italy and Sardinia. Call on the scarcely cruised to Porto Torres, a small Sardinian port on the Bay of Asinara, before sailing through the Bonifacio Straits to reach Piombino in Tuscany, a new port of call for Saga Cruises. It offers an ideal chance to visit one of Italy’s most instantly recognisable landmarks, the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

A highlight of your cruise will be exploring the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome from Civitavecchia. The capital of Italy is a treasure trove of art and architecture that deserves to be explored time and again, while first-time visitors can join a tailor-made tour to see its star attractions, including the Colosseum and Spanish Steps. Your days ashore will be complemented on board with insightful lectures that highlight the influence of the Roman Empire on the ancient Mediterranean.

Plus, savour the tactile experience of dining on dishes that our Roman predecessors would have enjoyed during a special banquet, as well as the chance to dress down at a toga party! You’ll also call at two Spanish ports, Malaga and Ferrol, as well as the British outpost of Gibraltar.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Southampton, England

Embark Spirit of Discovery. Depart 1700.

Day 2 - 4: At sea

Spend the day at sea.

Day 5: Malaga, Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 1200.

Set on the balmy Costa del Sol, Malaga has basked in the Spanish sun since the 8th century BC when the Phoenicians founded it. It flourished under the Moors and a palatial fortress, The Alcazaba, still guards the city from this time. You can delve further into Malaga’s Roman past on a walking tour visiting the first century AD theatre which was unearthed in 1951 right in the city centre.

Day 6: At sea

Day 7: Porto Torres, Sardinia

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Legend has it this Sardinian city was founded by Julius Caesar and there are enough ancient remains to suggest that this town flourished under the Roman Empire. Explore on foot to truly get a feel for the city and be sure to visit the Basilica di San Gavino, one of Sardinia’s best Romanesque churches. Afterwards, Spirit of Discovery will cruise through Bonifacio Straights en route to the Italian mainland.

Day 8: Piombino (for Pisa), Italy

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Join Spirit of Discovery on a visit to Piombino, a first for Saga Cruises. Set where the Ligurian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea meet, this small Italian town looks towards Elba Island, part of the Tuscan archipelago – head to Piazza Bovio for the best views on a clear day. Alternatively, from here you may choose to join an excursion to see that most famous of askew landmarks, The Leaning Tower of Pisa. The historic Tuscan city of Pisa lies on a plain near the estuary of the River Arno and was originally a wealthy port with a mighty naval fleet before the land was eventually reclaimed from the sea. Pisa is famous for the Campo dei Miracoli or Field of Miracles where its Leaning Tower precariously stands.

Day 9: Civitavecchia (for Rome), Italy

Arrive 0900. Depart 1700.

Spirit of Discovery will moor just 50 miles from Rome, so don't miss the chance to join a sightseeing tour today. From the Colosseum to the Sistine Chapel, Rome's glories are endless – no wonder it's called the Eternal City! There are so many ways to spend a day here – perhaps take a transfer and explore independently, or join a guided tour of the best sights such as St Peter's Basilica, the Forum and the Colosseum. You could also enter Vatican City to see the renowned Vatican Museums and the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel.

Day 10: Salerno, Italy

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Admire Salerno’s setting at the end of the Almalfi Coast as you cruise into this bustling port. It was the landing site for Allied forces during World War II but has since been extensively restored. Explore the medieval quarter at its heart and admire the Norman church, visit the Byzantine castle, which watches over the town, or take a stroll along the bustling palm-lined promenade. If you're looking for adventure, you can head up the slopes of Mount Vesuvius and peer into the crater, or visit the outstanding archaeological site of Pompeii which was encased in volcanic ash from this stratovolcano when it erupted in AD 79. Today you can walk through the streets and imagine how they would once have looked.

Day 11 & 12: At sea

Day 13: Gibraltar

Arrive 0800. Depart 1200.

Despite being bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, Gibraltar has a distinctly British character. Take advantage of the duty-free shopping, visit the fascinating military museum or discover the famed 1,400-foot-high Rock, home to the mischievous Barbary apes, by cable car.

Day 14: At sea

Day 15: Ferrol (for Santiago de Compostela), Spain

Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.

Ferrol sits on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Spain. It has been a shipbuilding centre for centuries and is the birthplace of General Franco. The city centre is modelled on Lisbon and has six parallel streets with squares on either side where you can find some of the best shops and restaurants. From here you can visit Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage City where the pilgrimage route, the Way of St James, concludes. Visit the magnificent cathedral said to contain the apostle’s relics and enjoy the exploring the cobbled streets of this golden city of sandstone, which is beautiful come rain or shine.

Day 16: At sea

Day 17: Southampton, England

Arrive 0800. Disembark Spirit of Discovery after breakfast.
