Spanish Islands of the Atlantic
Spanish Islands of the Atlantic
Cruise parallel to the Iberian Peninsula west coast before peering up at the 25 de April suspension bridge as Spirit of Discovery sails up the Tagus River to reach Portugal’s elegant capital of Lisbon. Next cruise to the Atlantic isle of Madeira, decorated in subtropical flora year round. Spirit of Discovery will dock at the heart of Funchal leaving you free to explore the parks, squares and cobbled lanes at leisure, or you can follow the levada channels through its mountainous heart.
Then contrast four of the Canary Islands where there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore on foot. Admire Mount Teide’s volcanic terrain in Tenerife, trek through pine forests to dine at a delightful tapas restaurant in La Palma, retrace Christopher Columbus’ footsteps in lesser-visited Gomera, and see Fuerteventura’s plutonic rock formations on nature walks or a thrilling 4x4 safari. On board you’ll be inspired by tales of adventure and can learn how the Canary Island’s varied volcanic landscapes were created. Plus, ORCA experts will help you spot whales and dolphins during the best opportunities from Spirit of Discovery’s deck.

Day 4 - Lisbon
Cruise under the 25th April Bridge, often compared to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, to reach the elegant capital Lisbon. Renowned for its array of architectural styles, in particular the Moorish Alfama district, Lisbon contains a host of must-see attractions.
Day 5 - At Sea
Day 6 - Funchal
Funchal became Madeira’s capital soon after Portuguese sailors discovered this ‘island of wood’ in 1418. Set around a grand bay, Funchal offers elegant squares, a striking cathedral, subtropical gardens and broad avenues for you to discover.
Day 7 - Santa Cruz, Tenerife
As ‘King of the Canaries’, Tenerife is the largest in this sunny archipelago and features landscapes that range from forests of eucalyptus and pine, to otherworldly black-sand beaches.
Day 8 - Santa Cruise, La Palma
By far the greenest of the Canaries, La Palma is often known as the 'Isla Bonita' or beautiful island. From the fertile orchards and verdant forests of the north, to the dramatic black wilderness of the south, the island offers a wealth of contrasting landscapes, while its capital, Santa Cruz, sits in an amphitheatre on the slope of a volcanic crater.
Day 9 - San Sebastian, La Gomera
Cruise to lesser-visited La Gomera next, a wild and rocky island where beautiful beaches and precipitous cliffs encircle its lush, mountainous countryside and ancient laurel forest.
Day 10 - Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura’s capital is a bustling port with whitewashed buildings and collection of outdoor artworks by local artists – you’ll be able to see at least one, a giant seashell, right by the harbour.
Days 11 & 12 - At Sea
Day 13 - La Coruna, Spain
From this port on the north-west coast of Spain, you can visit the city of Santiago de Compostela. Perhaps follow in the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims on the pilgrimage known as the Way of St James, which has the city’s cathedral as its final destination – see all this and more on an optional guided tour.
