Q & A with Miles

Miles Morgan

20th November 2015: It's always great to meet so many of our customers when I'm out and about at our local events and I look forward to meeting even more of you, as we have many more planned. Here I answer some of your most frequently asked questions.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge since starting Miles Morgan Travel?

A: Starting just before Lehman Brothers went bust. Customers quickly became worried about a new business start-up and the security of their money. That, and getting our name known was a huge challenge in the early days.

Q: The highpoint since starting the business?

A: That one is easy! Getting the award as the best Travel Agent in the UK. I was totally gob-smacked.

Q: The most memorable experience?

A: No contest. When we chartered the ship for the Titanic Memorial Cruise, we spent 5 years planning every detail of the voyage. The biggest focus was the memorial service over the exact site on the 100th anniversary. We would have descendants onboard, as well as the BBC streaming live to millions around the world. The result was just amazing and the hairs still stand up on the back of my neck just thinking about it.

Q: What is your favourite destination?

A: It is and always has been Majorca. A short flight and a place full of diversity, from the wild nightlife of Magualuf, the class and charm of Palma to the beautiful mountains inland and the beaches in the North. The setting has something for everyone and is a happy place for me.

Q: And Hotel?

A: The Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown, just outside Queenstown, New Zealand. It is not total luxury, but is beautiful. The setting, surrounded by mountains, is amazing and we just had a lovely time with lasting memories. Very close behind is Castaway Island, Fiji and Hayman Island on the Barrier Reef.

Q: And still on your list of places to visit?

A: That one is also easy, The Galapagos Islands. Wildlife, adventure and a real sense of getting back to nature. One day...

Q: Do you have a favourite bar and restaurant?

A: For a bar it would be the Renaissance Hotel in New York. The bar is a hidden secret and has the most stunning views across Time Square. Restaurant? The Gonu Bar, Le Meriden Hotel Fujairah in the UAE. Not a la carte dining, but relaxing with simple, good food, great service and stunning views across the sea.

Q: Your most embarrassing moment when travelling?

A: I was going on a work trip to Australia and leading up to the trip was very busy. I failed to check my passport and on reaching Heathrow found my visa had expired the week before. The moral of the story is, ‘Don’t try and do it yourself, use a good travel agent!’

Q: What do you always pack when travelling?

A: Chargers for my tech! And a pair of headphones. Love my tech and enjoy my music.

Q: If you were not in travel what would you have done?

A: I used to sell plants on a market stall from the age of 10 and love plants, trees and gardening. A career in horticulture would probably be my second career.

Q: What do you get up to outside work?

A: I am married with two children and a dog so that keeps me busy! I still love my gardening and now I am past my sell by date for sport, I have started helping with the coaching of my son’s rugby team.

Q: Tell us something that will surprise us about you.

A: I have a herd of 35 Alpacas! It started with 5 and got out of hand. I love their calmness and it is a great distraction outside work.

Miles Morgan The box that Miles is sitting on was his mother and father's. It was used when they cruised back from their plant-breeding years in Nigeria in the late '50s.
