23rd October 2015: I’ve been lucky enough to sample some of the best hotels during my recent adventure to Tenerife and La Gomera. All in all I can highly recommend Tenerife and La Gomera – especially for some Winter Sun. The islands are home to some top class hotels with fantastic facilities.
Meg from our Malmesbury branch travelled with Tracey from Portishead, Gill from Clifton, Debbie from Ross On Wye and Alison from Nailsworth, so we have expert knowledge on these hotels across the South West - drop by or give us a call to find out even more.
Vincci Seleccion La Plantacion Del Sur, Tenerife
This 5* Gran Luxe hotel is a beautifully designed hotel set within lovely grounds. Formally a Bannah Plantacion (hence the name). The hotel has kept a small part of the gardens in honour of the plantation. The rooms here are great; beautifully decorated and very bright, spacious and airy, however the real highlight for me has to be the spa – and out of all the hotels I visited, I still say this is the best. They have a specialist spa circuit with no fewer than sixteen individual cabins for treatments and couples can hire this part all to themselves.
The Ritz Carlton Abama, Tenerife
Now for my favourite of all; where do I start?! I fell in love with this hotel and I am already planning my trip to go back and stay here! The Abama is set high on a clifftop with commanding panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. It hosts stylish accommodation and a very personal service.
The location of Guia De Isora is a little isolated but due to the size of the resort you have everything you might need so it’s not necessary to venture out. To me this is a perfect spot for a fantastic 4 night break.
The Abama is home to plenty of restaurants, and included within your half board are 3 A La Carte options. You can find plenty of atmosphere in the sports bar and Cuban bar nearby.
There is a lovely little beach which can be reached via the hotel’s free train service and then you just catch a short funicular lift to the ocean’s edge.
If you feel like treating yourself why not push the boat out and stay at the Tagor Villas; an exclusive row of adult only suites set away from the main resort. A whole host of added extras are included along with your very own private buggy to get around the resort for the duration of your stay.
Gran Hotel Bahia Del Duque Resort, Tenerife
Set within very large grounds, this hotel is beautiful. The staff dress in Canarian style clothes which creates a cultural atmosphere. Even though this hotel can accommodate large numbers of guests, you never feel like there is not enough room as the grounds are so spacious. There are 5 pools to choose from; we swam in the adults only salt water pool.
The spa here comes a very close second to the Vincci for me. Lots of lovely outdoor space, beautiful treatment rooms, private couple areas and a pleasant pool – thinking back, this actually might be my favourite spa!
The location of the hotel and villas is excellent and offers a promenade all the way along to Los Cristanos.
Our visit to this hotel took us to the Las Villas Gran Hotel Bahia Del Duque which are nothing short of spectacular. As soon as you open the front door you can do nothing other than say 'wow'. The décor, views, private pool - everything is top class! These are located in a private part of the hotel and offer separate restaurants, bars and pool area.
We dined at two of the hotel’s restaurants. El Bernegal buffet has a picturesque setting offering a large terrace. Fresh meat, fish and pasta cooked just to your liking and a whole host of other dishes to choose from. We spent the rest of the evening at the piano bar with a bottle of fizz before retiring to our rooms.
The next night we were treated to a tasty A La Carte meal at the Las Aguas which really was top class. The attention to detail here was impeccable and I can highly recommend the white chocolate soup for dessert!
Villa Cortes, Tenerife
Located centrally within Playa De Las Americas, this restaurant is at the end of the Golden Mile within walking distance of designer shops, sophisticated bars and fine restaurants.
The Villa Cortes is very authentic in style following a Mexican theme. Again this is a 5* Grand Luxe hotel. We had a delicious lunch here which was a real treat and one of the best meals for me during our stay. This hotel is also used for guests who are travelling to La Gomera as a place to stay until catching their ferry or flight.
Roca Nivaria, Tenerife
This hotel grew and grew on me as we did our tour. It is located in Playa Paraiso, which is a lot quieter than I had ever imagined – literally one street of shops and restaurants. The hotel offers breath-taking views and has access to a small sandy beach.
The rooms are very tastefully done and are modern in décor. The balconies are a great size and all have sunbeds. There are lovely welcoming grounds which are home to two swimming pools.
It offers a popular all-inclusive option with great restaurant choices. We dined in the buffet which was a great standard, again offering freshly cooked options.
Botanico Hotel, North Tenerife
My first impression of this hotel was that it was very grand and elegant with a traditional feel. It is located 1.5km away from the city and a 10 minute walk to the beach.
The Botanico Hotel is home to an Oriental Spa Garden which was a stunning little spot where we were also treated to a gorgeous lunch of delightful tapas dishes accompanied by a lovely glass of white wine.
Jardin Tecina, La Gomera
Jardin Tecina offers beautiful landscaped gardens and uninterrupted views of the ocean, Tenerife and Mount Teide. Beware though – there are lots of steps at this property. We had some free time this afternoon so we made the most of the sunshine and went for a dip in the pool and a laze around on the sun loungers.
We had dinner at the Club Laurel which was a real treat reached via private lift; a stunning ocean front location with a cliff backdrop. My special top tip for this hotel that not many people are aware of – on arrival ask about dining in the private cave that the Club Laurel have – this is such a unique feature of this hotel. It’s an actual cave high up in the mountain with ocean views where a couple can dine privately and not be disturbed. The dinner arrives by a special lift and you can order drinks by phone so you are never disturbed.
